Chocolate lovers rejoice- I’ve got you!
When it comes to chocolate, there are SO many different flavors and variations of candy bars. But for comparison purposes, let’s just look at pure chocolate bars.
The percentage refers to what percentage of the bar is actually made from cacao beans. 99-100% cacao is usually referred to as baking chocolate, because it is VERY bitter on its own. Cacao with nothing else added to it is extremely bitter.
As you get lower in the percentages, you’ll noice the sugar content begins to raise. As you go down, you go from unsweetened chocolate, to bittersweet, to semisweet, to milk chocolate (10-30% cacao), and finally to white chocolate (which contains no cacao at all)
Generally speaking, people consider dark chocolate “healthy” and milk chocolate “unhealthy”. This boils down to 2 factors: the added sugar in milk chocolate, and dark chocolate contains many antioxidants that milk chocolate is lacking.
But if you’re looking to enjoy some chocolate, don’t feel like you HAVE to eat dark chocolate. Sure, it contains less sugar. But from a calorie standpoint, it’s going to essentially be the same as milk chocolate. Personally, I don’t like dark chocolate at all and very rarely eat it.
You might very well find chocolate bars with different percentages- 65%, 50%, etc. Understanding what the different percentages mean, you can find the right percentage to satisfy your tastebuds!
